The Danube, Vienna

For this month's theme 'When people think of my City, they think of...'

One; the famous Waltz, Blue Danube by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II. The song originally has an accompanying lyrics but through the years, the instrumental (particularly the orchestral version) gained fame and is the most commonly used nowadays.

To hear the song please click here.

The lyrics of the song pertain to the Donau or Danube which is the longest river in the European Union that passes through several Central and Eastern European Capitals, one of which is Vienna. Part of the song lyrics goes:

Donau so blau, so schön und blau, durch Tal und Au wogst ruhig du hin, dich grüßt unser Wien, dein silbernes Band.knüpft Land an Land und fröhliche Herzen schlagen an deinem schönen Strand.

When translated:

Danube so blue, so bright and blue, through vale and field you flow so calm, our Vienna greets you, you silver stream through all the lands you merry the heart with your beautiful shores.

Below is a statue of Johann Strauss II. Less than a minute after I posted it in flickr today, there was a comment (from Gary Hall of California) saying: 'Stadtpark - Wien, Austria' so I guess people think of Johann's statue too when they think of Vienna as this is located in the 1st district frequented by tourists.

vienna sausage

On a lighter note, people also think of Vienna sausage immediately when they hear 'Vienna.' It has become a common joke between me and friends...'Hey bring me some vienna sausage when you come home.' Or 'How much does a can of vienna sausage cost there?' And many more.

The funny thing is, sausages here are not canned but can be bought 'freshly' naked. Sorry that I don't have a photo of the sausage stores but I will post it later this week. -Fin-

  1. Exactly! That's what I think of when I think of your delightful city. The beautiful Danube river, the music of Strauss and even the Vienna sausage, which I've never bought tinned (do they taste any good?), but rather fresh in natural skin.

Great post. Have a nice theme day. :)

    Cheers!

  4. Hi Kim! True, the canned sausages are short and stubby and has a lighter color. Sausages come in variety (I promise I will post the other sausages within the week). There are Kaesekrainer, bratwurst, Waldviertler, Debreziner, depending of what they're made of and how they taste.

Here in Vienna we call these frankfurters (I know you do too), ironically, they are called Wiener in Germany. Frankfurt is a town in Germany while Wien (Vienna) is the capital of Austria. ;-)

When summer, the shore of the Danube becomes naked sunbathing zone. =D Thanks for dropping by!

  14. Your city is so beautiful it would be hard to choose but yes, the beautiful river. I might have selected, also, sachertorte!

  15. You managed to show the Danube really blue!!! It does not look like that by the time it gets to Budapest. Strauss is always a pleasure to remember - but it was your comment about the 'freshly naked Vienna sausages' that teared me up with laughter. Oh, the images that comment conjured up :) Thank you, I really needed a good laugh along with the great photos!

  16. Ah yes Jilly! I unfortunately do not have a photo of the cake! I will try to get some this week. Thanks for dropping by.

This photo was taken during Spring, Isadora, and perhaps the coolness adds to the color...at this time, some parts are frozen. Glad that I made you laugh...Good day to you!

  21. I lived in Vienna for nine months back in 1990 and absolutely fell in love mit der Stadt am Donau.

When I think of Wien, I think of Strauss and Mozart and Manner and Sachertorte and schnitzel.

    What a beautiful city!

  22. Hello! Janet is it right?

Mozart and schnitzel were on my list too but I do not have photos of them as of now...I was thinking of taking photos of the Mozart chocolate store, I only have here a photo of the impersonator...see here: http://viennadaily.blogspot.com/2008/01/silverman.html.

I will surely go out and get photos of them for you and also Männer and sachertorte...Thanks for dropping by! =)

  23. Janet it 'tis.

I just realized a couple of other things that remind me of Vienna: the Naschmarkt where I bought a lovely Trachtenjacke; the U-bahn (I use to have the stops and transfers memorized); and Schonbrunn. Then there was the cheese monger just down the street from the apartment I lived in at Kreuzgasse 47. Of course, I could go on and on and on... One day, I should just move back to Wien and do nothing but take pictures!

  24. Whoops. Sorry. Meant to post that last comment under my photography blog name. Oh well.
