Needless to say, Vienna boasts of architectural pride as its European counterparts. It is a great effort by the government to have preserved buildings of old and opened them as museums to the public...if they are not actually built as museums.
Here is the back of the Naturhistorisches Museum (Science) situated at Vienna's Ringstrasse and is frequented by tourists, famous for its extensive preserved and stuffed animal collection.
The museum was built in 1819 along with a vast garden (Maria Theresien Platz) and another building identical to it which is the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art). The façade of the Naturhistorisches Museum has names and statues depicting personifications of the various continents known to Austrian science at the time - Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

graffiti

16 June 08

I enjoy graffiti at times, especially those that I see on train tracks. At some points though they can be an eyesore. Especially if they are not artistically done (?) ;-)

To prevent too much graffiti eating the walls of the city, the government proposed paintings on the walls of the underground. This one is on the newly furnished Praterstern station which used to be the dirtiest and smelliest station (that I hate going to). It used to be frequented by drunkards and beggars, but now seems to be the cleanliest...

See other graffiti on the train tracks here.

statue

29 May 08

First, thanks to Maria for the information about yesterday's photo. The sculpture is Alfred Hrdlicka's MEMORIAL AGAINST WAR AND FASCISM (Mahnmal gegen Krieg und Faschismus, 1986).

Following this time is that of Ulrike Truger, "Zwang – Flucht – Freiheit" a sculpture dedicated to Empress Elizabeth at the Hermesvilla. The statue presents the areas of "obligation - escape - freedom" which are all being faced by the empress at the same time. These are shown by the three sides of the sculpture that stands for the ambivalence of personality, the subjects for the obligation, the coat for the escape and the wing for the freedom.

It is made of carrara marble and weighs 6,5 tons! (The kids in front are from the kindergarten, plus my daughter.)

Thank God it's Sky Watch Friday!

I've seen similar statues in different areas of Vienna but never got the time to look who the artist is. Anyway this shot was taken near the Albertina museum that I featured a while back...

Passing by Ringstraße (Vienna, 1st district), one would be delighted with the clean street, calm ambiance and classic building facades when looking for fine dining.

A preview of what I'd be posting soon...

The United Nations Organization, more popularly known as UNO is one of the many international agencies located in Vienna. Situated across the Danube River (U1 train station Vienna International Center), the area occupied by UNO has been a site of anything tall (structures), modern architecture, and glass buildings.

I took this shot as the train passed by. On sunny days, the flags would be present, and gone when it rains...Do you see yours?

Agree or not, some of the best musicians can be found on the streets, willingly sharing their art to passersby....Watch out for more musicians from Mozart and Strauß's city!

doggie

10 July 2008

Tuesday I posted about the dog sign around the area and Thursday this is what I saw, it was the same sign I took a photo of. The kids were like, "Oh mama what happened?" And I just don't know what to say, even though its just a sign it isn't a good example to kids for other people to just break them like that. (Just being unhappy and griping on my part).

While below is a container of plastics. With play of words, the sign says "Nimm ein sackerl für mein gackerl." (Take a sack for my poops.)

dogmarks

08 July 08

Janet, I remember you commented during theme day that Vienna should have dog signs that says 'no' for their gackerl... Vienna has those for a while but were eye level (as high as the traffic lights), those that are on the grasses were mainly in residential areas. But today, when I came out, I saw these small markers practically everywhere (where the grasses are). There you are, no more poops for the doggies in the streets and grasses!

Owners who let the dogs make poops will pay 36 euros! The solution is to always carry a plastic bag with them. (Ein sackerl für gackerl= A sack for the poop). The horses in the city do not have that much problem. Notice they already have a big sack behind them, this catches everything that comes out from their behind, though it isn't really good to smell those.

rain

7 July 08

And I was so proud to say that its summer lol, it rained today while the kids and I were out at the city center. It isn't favorable because I didn't bring any raincoats nor umbrellas thinking that its still going to be a sunny day.

I guess the older people are right to say verrücktes Wetter '(crazy weather)!'

P.S. Janet, you might notice the photo above is the big Männer store in Stephansplatz =)

"That God never painted two same skies is a wonder!"

View from our balcony at around 4am...since summer means longer days, it starts early and ends later.

mezzanine resto

23 June 2008

At the side of the museum is a restaurant where seats are arranged outside the mezzanine patio for diners to enjoy the sun. I say this was quite an artistic addition to the appeal of the museum.

Below is a sidestreet as seen from above.

no smoking

1 July 08

A sign we see a lot yet is still neglected by many. If they don't manufacture it, I guess we don't need this sign anymore. I did mention before that smoking is prohibited in all train stations of Vienna, those who get caught will pay 60euros!

no dogs, no bikes

See how sad the faces of the dog and kid are? Because bikes and dogs are not allowed in the grounds.

no biking

"No wheels"

Today is City Daily Photos' Theme Day.

I enjoy both travel and photography. Although I haven’t been all-over the world, I try to document my journey and share it around. Here, my current hometown Vienna, a city I come to love not just for its intrinsic beauty but its overall aura of good vibes, I share bits and pieces of what to see and enjoy. -Marie Gizelle
