Tyrol, Austria, is the home of the luxury brand name for the range of precision-cut lead crystal glass Swarovksi.

Swarovski was patented in 1892 by Daniel Swarovski, himself born into a family of glass cutter Austrian monarchs. It was then known as K.S. &Co.

The crystals range from miniatures to big statues, jewelry, couture, home decor and chandeliers and more.

Originally, the Swarovski logo was an Edelweiss flower. It was in 1988 when it was changed to the Swan.

danelion

11 April 08

Taraxacum, are weeds that we see a lot on summers, though they are more commonly known as dandelion. I have always wondered why its called a dandelion, I assumed that the name has to do with a lion, since in german it is called Löwenzahn (Lion teeth), I recently found out that it is indeed of French origin, dent de Lion.

danelion2

Dandelions are composed of hundreds of florets, so when dried up, a dandelion clock (below) is composed of hundred of seeds that makes them proliferate much faster as they also disperse easily, especially with the help of kids.

Finally, I was able to capture a sunset behind our building...

Street musicians from the city of classical Music!

placidlake

17 April 08

This is a small lake, more like a pond (with still water) found as an extension to the Danube. Ducks, swans and other birds frequent this area.

During winter and when the water freezes, this is the safest place to skate-as the water isn't too deep...

kids on ausflug

Being at the Northern Hemisphere, Vienna entered the cold season already...technically winter starts on Dec 22 but you'd surely feel the coldness as early as November.

Today I am showing you partly what you can see at the city center, the big patio at Stephansplatz where both locals and tourists mingle to shop (notice the Zara shop on background), take photos (a church is near and other landmarks) and eat (Chatanooga is one to try).

A group of kids went out to enjoy the cold breeze on that morning, while my friend and I enjoyed the mime artist/painted guy who kept the crowd laughing with his whistling. By the way, my friend (in pink) is much older than me (which wouldn't really show) but I enjoy laughing with her, she keeps the little world around me colorful.

Two skywatch posts ago, I wondered if the smoke was really building up or just a whiff of clouds in the horizon. I did confirm using a longer lens that it is smoke (chimney smoke?)...early in the morning (photo taken at 8:21). ..yes, its the sun rising not setting. :)

The joy of being a child...to play and laugh.

Matthew 18:2 So, calling a young child to him, he set it in their midst
3 and said: “Truly I say to YOU, Unless YOU turn around and become as young children, YOU will by no means enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
4 Therefore, whoever will humble himself like this young child is the one that is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens;
5 and whoever receives one such young child on the basis of my name receives me [also].

The Old Danube is a very picturesque area accessible to the public both for swimming and as a leisure park.

Tourists and locals alike enjoy this particular spot. This swimming area is perfectly suited for all those who love row boats, motor boats, paddling boats and sail boats.

There are pools by the shore, as well as various restaurants, snack bars, sports clubs and more.

ferris wheel

25 February 08

One of the famous playplace for kids in Vienna is the Praterstern. Carnival, arcade games and pure fun awaits them and also those child-at heart here. One of the biggest attraction is the big Riesenrad (Ferris/Giant wheel), it has become a Viennese icon much like the London Eye or Tokyo's Big-O or the Singapore Flyer. A ride would give you a good view of the city.

The Ferris wheel was erected in the years 1896-97 by the English engineer Walter Basset, The same engineer who made one in London, as well as Chicago, Blackpool, and Paris.

Technical Data
Total height: 64,75 m
Diameter of the Wheel: 60,96 m (=200 feet)
Height of axis centre: 34.20 m
Total weight of the iron structure: 430,05 t
Turning speed: 0,75 m/sec = 2,7 km/h

Number of cabins: 15 (prior to 1945: 30)

Since 1987 cabin nr. 30 serves as a luxury cabin

Prices range from 3,20E (kids) to 8E(adults) but lower when you come in groups.

If you look closely, there's another circle...it is the reflection of my camera on the train's glass window.

(^By Notting Hill Gate)

I enjoy both travel and photography. Although I haven’t been all-over the world, I try to document my journey and share it around. Here, my current hometown Vienna, a city I come to love not just for its intrinsic beauty but its overall aura of good vibes, I share bits and pieces of what to see and enjoy. -Marie Gizelle
