Vienna Daily

One Viennese photo a day.

facebook google twitter tumblr instagram linkedin

This is a banner at the entrance of the Vienna International Center...the compound holding the offices of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and a number of other United Nations Organization. The compound is also rightfully called UNO (United Nations Organization).

We went to tour around for an hour and saw some of the most important features of the UNO. Hopefully I get to show them all soon. Meanwhile, some friends and I have weeks ago started a program to send boxes to Japan. These boxes contain relief goods and other necessities and are sent to Japan to help those who are affected by the tragedy. As my favorite quote goes:

“Remember there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” -we are doing our part. Kindly check the sidebar of this blog. Thank you.

Some months ago I was putting up a series of photos about our Lange Nacht der Museen (long nights at the museum) experience. I still got a lot of photos that I haven't shown and these are some of the more appropriate not only for My World Tuesday but for Night Shots as well.

The woman in the photo was someone who just got out of the bus (yes, I was inside the bus when this shot was taken). She caught my attention because of the red beret/beanie and the doll hanging on her bag.

We met her again later by the Albertina....the museum you can see below. The green statue is something I have featured too in the past, most recently in the window reflection two posts before this. Up there was where I was standing when I took the photo of the Opera haus.

P.S. I made a listing of all the blog memes I am joining, others that I plan to join, if you host a meme, please kindly inform me through the Daily Badges Page.

You've probably heard the Parable of the Pear tree or in some version, the Parable of hope.
It is the story of a man who had four sons whom he wanted to teach not to judge things too quickly.

He sent each of them on a mission to go and look at a pear tree at the field. The first son went when it was winter, the second during spring, the third in summer and the youngest when autumn came.

When they had all  gone back home, the father called them together to describe to him what each witnessed.

The first son said  "I see nothing of promise about the tree. It appears old, and gnarled and has no blooms on it at all. I doubt it will survive the winter."

The second son said "The tree is very beautiful, with white blooms, but it seems purely ornamental, it has no fruit, nor any sign of ever bearing any. I doubt it will be of much practical use to us."

The third son disagreed and said "The tree seems to be growing and doing well, and it is full of leaves, and I could see some fruit, so I picked one and tasted it, but it was bitter, not fit for human consumption. I doubt it will prove of much use to us."

Finally, the last son said "Father we must come quickly for the harvest is upon the tree, and it is heavy laden and needs us to pick the pears for they are ripe and delicious now."

The father called his four sons back together, and said, "You see each of you have observed well the condition of a the tree at a particular season of the year, but your judgment of the tree was only partial, and made too quickly based on what you saw on only the one occasion. See to it that you never judge human beings this way. Never evaluate them too quickly or on the basis of one encounter, for it is unfair and unwise. Indeed all living things should only be evaluated over the course of time and after repeated careful inspection, for who knows but the ugliest and most unproductive of living things might some day turn into the most beautiful and fruitful."

Just the same, we can look at the left and see bare branches of trees but if we look beyond we see the beauty of the blue sky. We can see on the right that the sky is gray yet we fail to notice the beauty of a blue lake. It is our attitude towards thing that makes our day bad or good. :)

Enjoy the rest of the week...

Wilhelm Jungmann and Neffe is one of the sturdiest business around Vienna established in 1838. They hold more than a thousand type of cloth and as you can see in the photo, colorful umbrellas.  They also stock buttons, scarves, ties, handkerchiefs and other of those tiniest bits one need in sewing.

Located at Albertina Platz 3, the shop is for tourists and photographers a real attraction. The artistic window reflects the statue of Franz Josef I which is installed at the mezzanine of the Albertina, a popular art museum in the city. The shop interior is also artistically designed by famous artisans...hopefully I get by again and have the chance to take photos inside.

A bird does not sing because it has an answer.
It sings because it has a song.
Chinese Proverb
---

The bird sings because it should and can. The kids laugh because they are happy. Things happen whether we like it or not....we do not have the answer to everything....yet life goes on. Our song, our journey goes on despite the obstacles as the bird sings through the changing weather.

How do you view this quote? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

"Boredom is the feeling that everything is a waste of time; serenity, that nothing is."
-Thomas Szasz

The weather let up a bit, despite the leafless trees I feel calm when I look at this scene. My heart still aches for the tragedy in Japan...as of the moment I am still waiting to hear from a friend who hasn't been online for 2 days now following the earthquake.

My heart goes out to everyone in Japan. Tears fall when I think of the damage that the catastrophe brought.  I got friends and a relative in Japan. I have often written my fondness to them...(two posts below you will read about the Japanese store I frequent)

Japan's chief Cabinet secretary Yukio Edano has said as official Kyodo news agency reported, that an "extremely large number of people'' had been killed. :(

The earthquake struck 80 miles offshore at 2.46 p.m. Friday Japan time.

The most immediate concern was the safety of the nation's nuclear plants. Some 3,000 people living near a nuclear power plant in Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo, were evacuated because of a reactor cooling malfunction, but the government cleared that no radiation was leaking. Authorities had turned off 11 power plants and 4 million people were reported to be without electricity...or gas for that matter. There was also a burning oil refinery as told by a friend...

During our visit at the International Atomic Energy Agency Office, we saw these Japanese miniature spaceships along with a number of replicated machines and space crafts from other countries.

Some weeks ago I got lost in the city...three days in a row. The third day was when I was looking for a certain Japanese shop that I found by accident while strolling around --- maybe 3 or more years ago. The shop sells authentic and exclusive Japanese products and this means theirs are a bit more expensive than the other Asia shops.

When I was finally able to find it I've been coming back often buying my supplies of rice, nori sheets, ramen and other of my kids and hubby's favorite food. Last week I was told that they are having a week-long sale in time for the Hinamatsuri (Japanese Doll Festival). I got some matcha powder (green tea) and these yummy takoyaki (grilled octopus balls)...(I also featured these on my other blog.)

I've featured the Vienna State Opera a lot of times for the past years...Though I've yet to attend the Wiener Opernball; of which former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos was a prominent guest. (See post below.)

I enjoy both travel and photography. Although I haven’t been all-over the world, I try to document my journey and share it around. Here, my current hometown Vienna, a city I come to love not just for its intrinsic beauty but its overall aura of good vibes, I share bits and pieces of what to see and enjoy. -Marie Gizelle
