petunia

29 Oct 08

Trumpet shaped flowers of various colors, which are mostly hybrids.
Erratum: The flower in photo is not a petunia, rather one from the Malvacea family as pointed out by Arija, thank you!

Pardon the date, I am now posting photos from my archives, most have withered away (see below). And I have lots to share by the way. Have a happy week everyone!

A view of the Fernwärme Wien from Friedensbrücke. The Danube Canal, seen above, runs from this part (19th district) to Schwedenplatz (2md district)...a perfect route for a Danube cruise and sightseeing.

Below, just a warm October morning.....the soft glow of the sun as seen from our balcony.

"A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such a speed...It feels an impulsion...this is the place to go now. But the sky knows the reasons and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond horizons.” -Richard Bach

snow

22 Nov 08

The first snow for this year (autumn/winter) fell down 2 days ago, when we were out with the kids at a mall. This is a view of the road from the mall's bridge. It was a few minutes before 5 o'clock but as the usual autumn and winter time, the sun is nowhere to be seen.

I totally forgot to take a photo from the balcony =D So when I was out with the kids today, there weren't much left, not at 1° .

These flowers are from the kindergarten taken last October. There are some of them still left nowadays but would surely wither as today, it has been forecasted snow is coming...

They are small flowers whose name I am not sure of...

At 7:40 am, sunrise is not progressing much too soon. The sun is still low behind the silhouettes.

Is there smoke building up too? Don't know, a golden sunrise is enough for me to wonder. Happy Skywatching!

The Wiener Linien is very efficient under circumstances that a bus, train or tram incoveniently has to stop for some reason. They would immediately send or schedule buses to take passengers to their supposed destination or the nearest available line.

Earlier, the line which I take has to go another route because this tram had a little problem, perhaps slid off the train tracks that the Supermen had to 'manually' lift it to put it back. Cases like this calls for the 'camera in action' role of hubby and I. It so happened he had the camera in his bag so I was able to get decent shots.

Located opposite the Opera House, Hotel Bristol is one of the best hotels to vie for when visiting Vienna. Location wise, the Hotel is right above the Karlsplatz station with many buses and train stations at its sidestreet, Opernring. From there, guests can easily walk to the city center and many attractions of historical Vienna, or to the shopping district!

The Vienna State Opera was the first major building on the Wiener Ringstraße commissioned by the controversial Viennese "city expansion fund". Work commenced on the building in 1861 and was completed in 1869, following plans drawn up by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, who lived together in the 6. Bezirk. It was built in the Neo-Renaissance style. This was the first opera built in Vienna.

The Vienna State Opera is closely linked to the Vienna Philharmonic, which is an incorporated society of its own, but whose members are recruited from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.

The Wiener Staatsoper is one of the busiest opera houses in the world producing 50 to 60 operas per year in approximately 200 performances. It is quite common to find a different opera being produced each day of a week. As such, the Staatsoper employs over 1000 people. As of 2008, the annual operating budget of the Staatsoper was 100 million Euros with slightly more than 50% coming in the form of a state subsidy.
You'd see employees dressed as Mozart or Strauß selling tickets near the area.

----

The opera company operates a repertoire system: more than 50 productions are staged every year, and there is a performance nearly every day for ten months of the year. The company is currently headed by the State Opera's Musical Director Seiji Ozawa.

The Vienna State Opera is particularly open to children: under Holender's direction (he has three children of his own), the opera house has become well-known for its children's productions, which are performed in a tent on the roof of the Staatsoper. Recent examples include Peter Pan, Das Traumfresserchen (The Dream-Gobbler), Der 35. Mai (May 35th), Aladdin and Bastien and Bastienne. In addition to this, there is a production of The Magic Flute every year for 9- and 10-year-olds, decorated like the Opernball.

The opera house also has an opera school for boys and girls between the ages of eight and fourteen, which takes place in the afternoons, around normal schooling. The children are taught in a manner appropriate to their continuing in a singing career; the opera recruits for children's roles from this opera school.

Did you guess the black building from last week? Here is the answer. =)

Today's photos were taken late summer this year...nothing much special, I wanted to take photos of the yellow field but I found the sky more interesting.

I decided to count my SWF posts too and today is number 24. All SWF posts are here.

23 May 05

Three to four years ago, I worked as an English-speaker in an after school institution for a bilingual school. The school is located at the back of the Vienna International Center, most of the kids' parents work there.

The job includes childcare in some degree. I am to speak English with the kids, back then was good because I do not speak German =D. I helped the kids with their homeworks, prepare food and tidy up later, accompany them to play outside the garden or the grounds (a small football field is there).

I learned German from the kids in my group, they would be so lively explaining to me how an English sentence is to be said in German, and they use simple words. I learned to be patient with them especially since the kids are from 55 different nationalities, mostly of mixed heritage...therefore, each a different personality, a different strength, different weakness. In my group was a (mom-dad arrangement) Filipino-Austrian, a British-Croatian, a Dutch-British, a Romanian-African, 2 Iraqi-Austrian, a Fench-Austrian, an Australian-Austrian and one whose parents are from the opposing parts of Sarajevo. Among the group we also had a boy from Iraq, a boy and girl from India (the nicest), at least I also remember a boy of Portugese decent, the loudest in the group whose mom was very nice =D. There were at least 9 kids whose parents are both Austrians.

Back then, I always have my camera too...I have compiled their photos and was glad I opened the folder today....Above photo: kids of group 3, the smallest girl was then 6 years old, she's surely in middle school now as the kids below, they were the grade 1 class and they were the sweetest, funniest sometimes most hard-headed in my group (gr 2).

Hi everyone! Thanks for your comments but Today's Flowers post is below this one =)

Still from the same garden from yesterday. I am not sure if these are daisies too but the flowers have layers of petals and were smaller...I'll surely post them next week on TF meme.

Since its November, I was surprised to see this bee still gathering food. Its hind legs surely is full of harvest for the day.

Join us every Sunday!

I got an award from Steven of Cavite Daily Photo. Thanks Steve. Along with receiving this award, one should pass it to 6 KreativBloggers. There are some of my favorite sites that have received the award already so I won't be passing this one to them anymore. I looked down my list and here they are:

My award list:

1. Chuck of Seattle Daily Photo - a pro photographer who has exceptional eye for details

2. Chica of Photo Projectz - a busy mom of 3 who always has time for creativity on the side

3. Thesserie - the rich girl from Holland who takes photos amazingly

4. Ces - a foodie and more, whose shots are always mouth-watering

5. Kylie of My Digital Life - also like Chica and I, a mom of three, she is the best designer/digiscrapper out there

6. Uel of Creative Vision Photography - Events photographer with a twist

Have a nice week everyone!

The advantage of having a garden is you get to grow plants and flowers abundantly. Unlike in a balcony or terrace, you have a limited space for them. This is what I love in the kids' kindergarten. They have a small garden where the kids could play, and flowers until now are blooming plentifully.

Daisies are some of the abundant flowers there, here are beautifully colored orange and pink. Daisies are from the family Asteraceae which comprises more than 1,600 genera and 23,000 species. Asteraceae are cosmopolitan, but most common in the temperate regions and tropical mountains.

Asteraceae are most usually herbs, but some shrubs, trees and climbers do exist. They are generally easy to distinguish, mainly because of their characteristic inflorescence and many shared apomorphies.

The leaves and the stems very often contain secretory canals with resin or latex (particularly common among the Cichorioideae). The leaves can be alternate, opposite, or whorled. They may be simple, but are often deeply lobed or otherwise incised, often conduplicate or revolute. The margins can be entire or dentate.

I got this photo from cocinella169.

I unfortunately do not have a photo of the structure upclose.

No winner for yesterday's Skywatch.

The grayish-black structure is actually a church.

See you again next week on SWF! =)

The Andromeda Tower (340 feet / 104 meters) was built from 1995-1998. This skyscraper of 29 storeys was designed by Wilhelm Holzbauer. The tower houses different international offices, a bank, a drugstore, a Chinese restaurant and more.

At the lower part of the frame you'll see a black structure. What do you think it's supposed to be? First to guess wins a postcard! :-)

(Austrian bloggers exempted)

Below, this building is leaning...again! Much like yesterday's.

P.S. It's only because of the angle that the building appears to be leaning =)

Still in the vicinity of Vienna International Center. This building isn't really leaning, just the way that I was holding the camera made it appear so.

Below, the main street between the two buildings 2 days ago...a busy street.

heute

29 Oct 08

Heute (Today) is a newspaper in Vienna, that is distributed - for free. One could avail a copy conveniently from the train stations and read just enough before going to work. Definitely a good way to disseminate information to the public.

What I like about this paper though is their contributor's section where readers can send their photo and gets paid a hundred euros when printed in the pages and a thousand as a banner!

(At the background of the 1st photo is another newspaper stand, that of Österreich. )
