seated

8 May 2004

Each vehicle under the Vienna transportation system has this standard sticker, a 'give the seat priority' to the pregnant, those with kids, the disabled and the elderly. Sometime last year, or was it in 2006, this has raised some issues and there were new stickers that were imprinted. With the pregnant woman unchanged (of course), she is now accompanied by a man with a child, a disabled woman and an older woman...Might as well get a photo of that soon, I don't remember taking one...

Anyway, below is the face of the lowered street cars =) The first (wagon) just behind the operator is reserved for wheelchairs.

  1. I hope the new sticker that includes the "father and child" reads better than the man with the crutch. Hard to make out at a glance. But, the message of the quartet is quite clear. Thanks for posting. We need more respect in our world and empathy for those around us with special needs.

  2. Second that.

Liked the colors on the sticker. Did they kept them?

  3. I think it was easier to draw a man with a crutch than a wheelchair Chuck, =) I hope I'd see one of the other sticker soon.

The city government here really gives priority to the women, kids, elderly and disabled...the health benefits, employment (for disabled), protection, subsidies and all that aims for their benefit. Good thing you mentioned emphaty, I appreciate the city more as I think of it.

  4. Hi Rafa, yes these older stickers can still be seen...I guess it is alternately used...at one window would be the new one and at the back the older one.

My second child was able to identify yellow, orange, blue and green at the age of 2 because of this sticker. =)

  5. Wow! What a sleek and slick looking new tram that is! I'll bet it's a lot more comfortable than the old ones with the wooden seats that have the potential to pinch your bottom.

  6. Why can we have cute trams like yours? The answer: freaking lobbyists! :((((

  7. Lol Janet, were you back in Dc when the new ones came? Well the seats are covered but they tend to be smelly unlike the wooden ones...some have been 'redressed' into leather seats, that way it won't pinch your bottom and won't smell bad! ;-)

  9. Nice identifying stickers. I like your commuter . We have our train from downtown Minneapolis to Mall of America and that is it. No other lines, yet. None in the works in the forseeable future. We're way too late in the train department here.

  10. Our MRT & LRT here look like junk compared to your train. And those stickers are great! We should have them here especially nowadays that chivalry in public transport is no longer in fashion.

  11. Like the sticker, these days you dont see much regard for people who should be seated first, I guess the governemnt is trying to do a nice thing. are they trying to be politically corect by replacing the woman and child with a man and child?

  12. I guess cars are in abundance there Dusty, well, they are here too but the streetcars and train are really practical...Again, let's hope the Prez or the lobbyists do something...;-)

  13. Back then, the Mrt wagons look nice Luna, but the Lrt trains are really bleeeh to look at...I wonder what happened, I used to love taking the Mrt from Sm edsa to Baclaran =)

  14. @destitute rebel: its more of the actual gender in the photo, sometimes there are fathers who have young kids with them, they deserve the right to get seated too since they have a kid!

Well, not taking the stickers literally, my friend has eyeglasses and he makes fun of the kids in the tram by telling them that those on the stickers wear eyeglasses so he should be seated too, lol.

  16. There'd be some delinquent Kyels, I remember one time I was watching a woman who had her dog seated and she wouldn't budge, there was an older woman who just stood there and waited but the woman with the dog didn't give up her seat nor the dog's! *sigh*

  17. Yeah Tutubi (your name is a mystery), they really have much programs for the disabled. The disabled are in themselves 'able to' because of the support given them.

  18. Someday maybe I will make it to Vienna ... (and have some sausages).
    Looks like a great place.

Those trains are really such a dream for those of us that still have to contend with Manila's jeepneys and occasional kalesas - and the accompanying pollution that they generate
-(the jeepney's into the air,and the kalesa's into the street)

  19. Try also the sacher torte, wiener schnitzel and much more--which reminds me I should post them in the other blog.

Lol...there are also calesas here and yes, its bad for the nose...but remember dagz, no matter how 'ok' a city is...there's no place like home (home where you're born) and where your family is...=(

    (Hinahanap hanap kita Manila...)

  21. Several French cities (Nantes, Nancy, Nice...) again adopt the tram after having let it down many years ago...Yours seems very nice. (and your children are so cute! I'd want see them very often here!)

  22. Hi Alice! Thanks so much for the compliments, I blog about being a mom at Mirage as usual. Please visit my kids there! =)

Even without the trams, I'd travel around France with a smile and I'll surely enjoy it!
