flowershop in the morning

21 May 08
I decided to post a flowershop instead of a food store since they are big and fit into groceries category rather than 'store.'
----
Even on a rainy morning, the flowershop at the corner blossoms with beauty. I especially like the older woman in this photo with 2 cups of coffee (or hot chocolate or tea). This corner shop is always a lovely sight to behold.

Below, the shop on a sunny day.

And since its a Sunday, I also have an entry for I Spy Sunday.

A wasp on the floor, perhaps getting tired of hopping from flower to flower.

Today is City Daily Photo's Theme Day, check out other corner shops around the World! Keep in mind though that due to time differences, others may not be up yet.

tulps pots

27 April 08

To those who wonders why my last post was on Monday, here's what happened: I am always using the macbook that hubby bought me, I seldom use his because he has sensitive stuff there that I am not allowed to touch. Last Monday, I left the living room with the macbook open, when I came back I saw the little boy pouring milk on it. The keyboard got affected, till now I am using an on-screen keyboard while typing... =(

----

About the crow photo, there are only 3! To those who counted 3, I say you got close to if not perfect vision!

To Hilda, I explain the photos I post sometimes as comments or as next day posts, sorry about the sulpture as I haven't researched on it yet, I will soon.

-----

Back to regular programming:

As I said I will feature the Schloss Belvedere for the following days. It is a baroque palace and is said to be the summer house of Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Turns out that that the Grand Palace not only have a majestic garden but a well maintained park identifying trees, vegetables, plants and flowers. It happened to be almost the end of spring when we came so we were still able to photograph the tulips.

Below is the facade of the Palace, in between the Palace and the flower island is a big pond which is not visible in this photo because of the low angle.

---

I will post photos of picture takers tomorrow...

crows copy

27 April 08

How many crows can you spot? This fountain is located at the lawn of the Schloß Belvedere, a palace said to have been the summer house of Prince Eugene of Savoy. I'd be posting photos about the palace and its garden for the following days.

The palace is under renovation at the moment so only photos of its exterior is possible. We settled for outside photos as many other tourists dis, see below. I will be posting people taking photographs at the Belvedere as a second photo! ;-)

streetscene

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauß walking the streets of Vienna? And they're handing out flyers too! =D
Employees of the Staatsoper, dressed as 17th-18th century elites, invites passersby to visit the Staatsoper (State Opera) to enjoy classical music.

Located at the corner of Kärtnerstrasse and Opernring, you wouldn't miss it coming from trainlines U4, U2, U1 and a lot more trams and buses to the station Karlsplatz. Schedules and more info are available here (German, English, Japanese).

28 April 08
The stretch of Kärtnerstraße in the first district being the city center is frequented by tourists and locals to eat and shop whole year round. As was mentioned before, this part of Vienna is very busy. The street has been closed for public transportation so this is a typical seen you would see in the middle of the street. You could enjoy having cofee or ice cream here while chatting with friends.
If you prefer a little less attention try the patios on the sidestreet. Whichever you choose, the cool breeze would surely make you feel refreshed (and sleepy sometimes lol).

stephansdom

28 April 08

I haven't featured any places of worship in this photoblog since I do not want to be biased about the religion each houses represent. But I am posting one today, Stephansdom because of its architecture, that of Romanesque and Gothic form dating back to 1147. The church has specifications as follows: Length: 107 m; Width: 70 m3 (I don't know how to superscript, sorry); Width (nave): 38.9 m4; Height (max): 136.7 m4. It is the Catholic mother church in the city. It is located at the very center of Vienna.

The church has been undergoing renovation, but its almost done, you'd see in the photo that one of the tower is yet to be finished. The church underwent renovation because through the years it has accumulated dirt and other forms of pollution that turned it to black (literally)...

(This photo was early last year.)

It has been a successful endeavor, now the walls are white again. Below is a miniature just beside the real church.

vienna sightseeing

28 April 08

I chanced upon some of the buses that tour around the city.

I like the red one better though, I remember asking my husband to board one when we were in Paris because I thought its a good way to see cities without walking much no?

I spy...a Sp(y)der!

I spy a spider hanging down a low bush. There were small flowers planted near the bush that I had to be careful not to step on them.

Post about photos that you took in a spying manner. Photos of wild animals while hiding behind a tree, a bush or photoscoping a bird from afar...a couple being sweet while you hide behind the benches, photos of hidden objects that you happen to see. Photos that you need to give extra effort to just to be able to achieve a good shot...photos you think fits 'I Spy something ____'

I guess this is better than having a weekly theme so everyone can post any subject as long as it is a photo they spied on...

alex and tulips

She really was so happy then, playing with the fountain's water, ran about the plaza, having photographed with a rainbow and then in front of violet tulips.

Unsere Garten (Our Garden) maintain the flower islands in the city starting from planting to watering, to weeding and later on throwing away. Click photo to see their butterfly logo.

rainbow

28 April 08

On the way back to the train station, daughter and I passed by a fountain and a statue which I forgot to check of whom...Daughter showed me the rainbow that she saw and here it is.

She just can't help the excitement seeing one. I had to explain how the rainbow comes about as I started hearing her why's.

Sacher tent

28 April 08

How about a sip of coffee or tea while watching passersby (tourists and locals) in front of your hotel?

A typical city sight when the weather is good. This one is the Sacher Hotel at the 1st District. Creator of the famous cake of the same name, which you could also have served for you in this corner. You'll find a recipe (and a little history) of Sacher Torte here.

Cans of spray paint, a face mask, a joint compound spatula, white cardboards, magazines and finished artworks lay about the floor on Kärtnerstrasse surrounding Johanna Schörkhuber, a spray paint artist.

Spray paint art is an artform utilizing spray paint and performed on posterboard or wood. It differs from traditional graffiti in that graffiti is performed on buildings, trains and the like, as opposed to more traditional art surfaces. This is a unique form of art that is generally performed on the street in large metropolitan cities creating surreal landscapes of planets, comets, pyramids, cities, nature scenes as well as simple one-colored backgrounds or even multi-colored backgrounds where the paint swirls together or fades from one color to the other through a series of differing values (of each color). Wikipedia.

I arrived after Johanna finished spraying one piece of work with orange-yellow background. In between taking shots, I disturbed her to ask if I would be allowed to post her photo and her works here. She smiled and being in the middle of work asked me to wait until she's finished.

Ten minutes after scraping, spraying, and texturing she proudly presented her work to everyone in the crowd, followed by an applause.

johanna

After introduction, I asked for permission to upload these photos. The journalist in me can't help to interview her a little more (hehe). She comes from Austria, unfortunately escaped my memory where in particular and has been practicing this art for more than 2 years now.

(Janet, thanks for the additional info about where exactly the place is, this is just above the stairs in Stephansdom.) Pardon me for lack of time, I have been outside the city, photos of which you would see here later.

Back to Johanna, the streets in this area is pretty much her open gallery, she said. She isn't everyday there though, but often stays there with her art. So in case you happen to be in the city, try stopping by and take home one of those surreal and wonderful artwork of hers. It was really a great opportunity that I met this talented lady while walking about in the city. Johanna, thank you for your time and for allowing me to feature you here. (Hope I'd be able to post this in German soon...*sigh*).

More of Johanna's artworks later. =)

A typical scene at the city center, people crowding about something interesting or unique performers in the street. Guess who I met that day?

A very talented spray paint artist. Her name is Johanna, I'd be posting more about her and her works in the following days. Happy weekend everyone!
