It was sunny today, earlier the sky was a plain and beautiful blue, though the sun was shining the wind was cold and strong. Later in the afternoon, the clouds formed into clusters like twisters....it's scary to think about twisters in this city!

I was able to get outside today, after being sick (autumn always carry some kind of virus lol). I went out with the 2 boys and got some photos to stock ;-)

As we were waiting for the lights to turn green I decided to click the camera that was on top of little boy's stroller. I clicked without looking into the viewfinder (I dont have an lcd to see what I'm shooting). I was thinking too that the people on the other side of the lane would get conscious if I point the cam at them. I was glad the framing turned out well.

tram

5 Feb 08

Red is a prolific color in this city. Everyday, I see red on buses and trams, of the old and new models.

The man in chains on the first photo has always been puzzling to me...What do you make of it?

Below, I think I featured this one before, the face of the newer trams which is more convenient to older people and for moms who have smaller kids (strollers).

oct2002

sometime in Oct 2002

When I arrived in Vienna, the surrounding buildings of the Vienna International Centre was partly being constructed. Today, plans of expansion and modernization are being realized by the city engineers. Housing as well as commercial spaces have been erected along with the offices and other convention centers in the area.

The VIC, designed by Austrian architect Johann Staber, was built between 1973 and 1979 just north of the river Danube.

About 5,000 people work at the VIC, which also offers catering, banking, postal and shopping facilities. Larger conferences can be accommodated in the neighbouring Austria Center Vienna, a conference and exhibition centre with a capacity of 6,000.

A major UN site along with New York, Geneva and Nairobi, the VIC hosts several organizations::

1. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
2. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
3. United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)
4. Office for Outer Space Affairs (OOSA)
5. United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
6. Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

Again, the last blooming flower in a planted hibiscus near our place. This photo was taken the same day as was last week's post, again with ma phone camera. But since autumn came I saw the city gardener's have planted cauliflower like plants, my favorite during autumn, in the flowerbeds. I'd surely post them next week and will not be using my phone camera ;-)

Have a nice week!!!

Within 10 seconds difference, same exposure, a slight movement to the right...How much difference did it make?

Of course, you have seen so much of these shots from my balcony but do compare if there ever was a time that they are the same. Please click here.

By the way. the fog photos were taken at 7:18 am and 7:36 am respectively, Sidney came closest! =)

(A scene from the intersection near our home.)

Taken today, it seems I have to rely on my phone nowadays because I forget to bring the camera along.

Could you perhaps guess the time (no pun intended) these photos were taken?

My photography evolves around 2 favorite subjects, a smaller world---my kids!

The bigger one would be scenes, places, interesting stuff or the people in Vienna...for 250 days now I've shown a little of the city almost everyday. Please enjoy the scenes from this part of the globe. Photos taken as early as 2002, until now.

(it was hard to focus using a phone camera...=( sorry)

It does seem I have less flowers to photograph and post now. This is one of the last yellow flowers of this plant with white leaves that looks immaculate.

A little over a year ago I was able to photograph the same kind of plant with a bonus bee.

Have a fun week!

NO photo for today, I am just too sad to post one.

I am really nice and friendly, perhaps even too honest. I respect all people, no matter the looks, color or language. But I guess its true, no two persons could be alike, perhaps the exact opposite! For the past 6 years I befriended a lot of older people since I find them interesting and respectful. But this day is different.

Today I was walking with the kids home...I felt conscious that someone is gazing at me intently...as I pass by the bus station an older woman stood there, with eyes wide open as if her stare could melt me away. I politely said Gruß Gott!, as a greeting.

What did the old woman do? She rolled her eyes and looked away. I felt really bad...it was the first time. So I walked behind her, waiting for her to look back...she didn't---I was farther away when she did and so I asked her, 'Do you have a problem with me?' The first time I confronted somebody too.

Too funny but stupid, she was waving her hand and told off the very first person ( a local) coming her way, words that I didn't hear anymore.

I think that was her way of annoying other people. Yes, staring at foreigners like that...I was already full for the day but ironically, I even gave time to say a polite Gruß Gott and stopped to ask what's her problem. Silly me!
Sorry, I'll post one tomorrow.

shop

14 Oct 08 (phone camera)

At the heart of Vienna, there are lots of streets that tourists rarely walk into because all the prominent shops are located in a one way shopping street, Kärtnerstrasse. This shop is located at Himmelpfortgasse, a quite street whose buildings have unassuming exteriors but rents cost 4 figures up ;-)

Sometimes, smaller shops like this have higher price tags than the usual fare of rtws...except of course the branded ones e.g. LV, D&G, Zara. Mango and others.

fog

Taken today with a phone camera (again) sorry, since hubby always brings the camera and I am too lazy to bring the other one =D

Anyway, fog is abundant early in the morning. All the more should travellers and pedestrian need to be careful when on the road. Especially if the pedestrian traffic lights turn green for only 3 seconds!

True, it has been a perennial problem every morning when bringing daughter to school...I always forget to list down things that needs to be noticed...street and transportation wise. We travel either by bus or tram to daughter's school, though both options have their own drawbacks.

1. Wir haben keine große(riesig) Schritte, dass wir die Straße in 3 Sekunden durchlaufen können.
-Yes, we do not have that big steps that could make us cross the street in 3 seconds...I have been shouted once because I crossed the street when the sign was still red...I did cross since I was watching the green light for the cars blink, naturally when it turns red, I can cross. The problem is, I have my daughter with me, its a bad example...but if I don't go hurriedly, the 3 seconds would be up for crossing. I once read that this will be fixed because it is most difficult for older people to hurry up going from one side of the street to the other...I wonder what happened...

2. Soll die Schultaschen auch sitzen? Should the bags seat too?
-There are kids who put their bag (both at the tram and in the buses) beside them occupying a whole seat. It is annoying to see especially when other kids stay standing up because the seats are full.

3. Aussteigen dann einsteigen. Let those hopping down, go out first before you go in. This is a rule that kindergarten kids are taught of...observed by many, save for a few hard-headed teeners. There are special areas in all public transport vehicle alloted for the handicapped and for strollers. This area is also the spot where schoolkids would stay standing up. So if you have a stroller and needs to hop down the bus, you should tell the kids to let you through...some would be nice enough to get down the bus...but some could be stubborn and would not budge...if the other passengers board also, you're stucked!

4. Lass die neuen wagen oft zu fahren. Let the new trams out often. Without exaggeration, it often happened that I was waiting for the lowered trams for more than a half hour... =( I do not like waiting in the cold too....I could use the older trams too right? Yes, if I am alone, but since I always have a stroller, it would be difficult to take it up!

10 Oct 08

I was thinking I might not be able to post flower photos for now since most of them have withered for the season. Glad that I still was able to see some flowers by the roadside. Most of them are the last blossoms actually but this small rosebushes bloom abundantly and in 'bouquets.'

They surely are a joy to look at.

I brought daughter to the school that day and I was really amazed how blue the sky was, I only had my phone camera then but I am still happy how this is. I turned around and saw this...the sun shining brightly!

Btw, the previous post is also a sky photo that is 6 years old already! =)

Happy Skywatching!

Ps. Photo Cache, Layrayski, I still am impressed of how Vienna is, and as I came here in Autumn, I always loved the smell of leaves and the sight of them falling on the ground...

October 2002

I came to Vienna on October 14 2002. It was like today, autumn, and the smell of dried leaves and the color of the season were most distinguished.

Hubby took daughter and I around the city and with our old olympus c100 took shots like tourists...now 6 years later, here they are.

"Geranium" is also the common name of members of the genus Pelargonium, which were formerly classified in the cranesbill genus. True Geraniums are frequently distinguished from the less hardy Pelargoniums as (rather redundantly) "hardy geraniums" by gardeners and in the horticultural trade. One can make the distinction between the two by looking at the flowers: Geranium has symmetrical flowers, while Pelargonium has irregular or maculate petals. Other former members of the genus are now classified in genus Erodium, including the plants known as filarees in North America.

autumn

1 Okt 08

"It was you that set up all the boundaries of the earth; summer and winter—you yourself formed them."—Psalm 74:17.
And so's autumn and spring.

Autumn has arrived...the sun has been sharing so few of its light, the plants and trees started to manifest its absence.

So how, or more appropriately, why does the green leaves of summer turns to yellow, orange or red during autumn? We know that leaves have the green pigment chlorophyll used in the production of plant food (glucose). Leaves also has the yellow (carotenoid pigment) and red (anthocyanin pigments) but is not seen much because they are covered up by chlorophyll. The leaves know that it is autumn when the days become shorter and shorter, since 'photosynthesis,' the process where plant makes food happens with the help of light.

As animals hibernate during winter, so does some plants and trees in the same way. Animals store fats and sleep off during winter while plant leaves store glucose and shut down their food making factories. The chlorophyll are then gone and now the yellow and red pigments are revealed, naturally when they combine, orange is produced.

As for maple trees, persimmons and other red colored leaves, the leftover foods plus the (occasional) sunlight and cool breeze of autumn makes this wonderful color comes out.
