27 July 08

It's very seldom, if not at all, that I post a photo of myself anywhere in the web, one is because I am always behind the camera...and I'd joke the camera would surely break down if I'm in front!

So for just one time, here's a photo of me (in red) with my friend at the Karlsplatz station.

Yoroshiku!!!!

Those mirrors interestingly has different demographic information about Vienna. This mirror reads: "(Those who) Fell in love in Vienna today: 292416. " I am not sure where they get the statistics though.

Since its Sunday, I went spying too. I spy on my daughter's photo session! lol. I forgot to ask the photographer's name since he is in a bind to finish so many sessions for this shoe casting....

Last week, I pointed out that summer isnt summer because the sun is seldom shining...but when it shines, it does shine brilliantly.

With these kind of cloud formations, being small, its difficult to distinguish anything that the clouds resemble. Could you see anything formed?

blue + moon

17 August 08

Again, a view from our balcony. Since the sun sets on the other side, I see lots of sunrises and no sunsets. So I took one shot when I was on my way home, just before crossing the street where the setting sun is visible.

Few months back I posted a photo of this same building while under construction...the photo was taken last year (august 25) and told myself I would go back when its finished, seems I didn't have the leisure to actually get back soon...

red chairs

20 August 08

It was a particularly gloomy day...with hints of black clouds from midmorning. I and the kids went for a walk, a long walk since I have been looking for a certain bank located at the city center. I remember looking at the map and recognizing the street, well I didn't really bother knowing well where it is =D. The search took us circling the streets surrounding the Oper and Opernring leading to a few parks with lots of tourists and locals loitering around.

Both photos were taken shortly before twelve, curiously the restos seemed to be a lazy sight...Well, if I was in Italy or Spain, I'd think its just the normal siesta time for them...

While looking for fresh fruits, there'd be lots to choose from...chances are, not only people would be picking out the fresh ones...

I spy a cricket on a banana...

27 July 2008

I was browsing through my flickr photo archives and saw this, one that I haven't posted yet. The facade of the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art history).

While below, butterflies on display at the train station directly going to both the Science and Art museums.

City 1st district

20 Aug 08

After so many years of being drived on, this is how a curved street of Vienna looked...on the other hand, the Danube still looks calm and peaceful even on an unpredictable day (as seen from the train)...

Summer, as it always had the past years, seemed to be missing much of the sun...clouds are always gloomy and light rains continue to water the city at certain times of the day. Honestly, I find this kind of weather better than the sun's scorching heat. Wait...isn't it autumn yet? (I had to mentally note, September 22 is the start of autumn lol) I guess autumn started earlier again!

The little boy has been playing alone when sister and brother wasn't home. I would take him to the playground to keep him from getting bored but it wasnt much fun too by himself. He isnt comfortable playing with other kids...

ice cream and the girls

25 June 2008

Last June, for the meme Litratong Pinoy (a filipino group) I posted this photo for the theme 'Slender.' At the same time I sent this as an entry for the contest that has to do with street scenes in Europe...I forgot to follow the results of that contest but I do not expect this photo to win, I join simply out of fun.

Contrary to how the sun appears in this photo, Vienna's weather has been a little colder and sometimes rainy...Ice cream would be a little inappropriate so here is a pinoy dish one can always enjoy!

Menudo, which could have evolved from a dish of the same name popular in Mexico, or Spanish influenced countries.

The recipe is available here.

abandoned street

12 August 08

Nah, typical of the neighborhood where we live...Contrary to the city center filled with people until the wee hours of the morning, ours seemed to be sleepy town at 8:50 P.M.

Not complaining though, coz I think its better that way so that we get to sleep peacefully or quieter perhaps...Except if the neighbor spends a lot of time drinking and talking with his pals then you would hear them murmuring and laughing since only the wall separates you!

Admittedly, I hope to transfer somewhere where there are no sounds of little feet scurrying from our ceiling or unrecognized words of anger shouted at someone's wife.

red moon

17 August 2008

Tonight I stood still from where I was when I saw the red moon as reflected on our mirror. I just had to take a photo and post it here, I have seen lots of moon, photographed them in different colors, sizes and shapes. This one is just so creepy, ironically I do not want posting creepy stuff lol...but just one.

My daughter and older son...

At the moment, only my youngest is at home, the two older kids are away (Germany) for almost a week now...=(

This could be the reason why I'm not motivated to post more interesting stuff...later today I'll try to persuade hubby to go to the Danube and take some photos...

Even at 8:02 PM, the sun is still giving off a little light to make Vienna's sky visible. But later the moon would take away the shine...Happy Sky Watching to all!

Pardon me but I lifted the information from the empress' wikipedia page.
Maria Theresa was the reigning Archduchess of Austria, Queen regnant of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia, and a Roman Empress by marriage.

She brought unity to the Habsburg Monarchy and was considered one of its most capable rulers. Her 16 children also included Marie Antoinette (2006 film), queen consort of France, and Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor.
She also contributed a lot to medicine when she made a decree that autopsies would be mandatory for all hospital deaths in city of Graz--Austria's second largest city. Some modern researchers have credited the Graz autopsy records with helping to make breakthroughs in their research.

Civil wise, Empress Maria Theresa innovated the decency police which was to patrol everywhere, especially Vienna, and apprehend anyone suspected of doing something that could be deemed indecent (possibly due to her husband's supposed infidelity). Arrested prostitutes, for example, would be sent into villages in the eastern parts of the realm, leading some contemporary writers to note that these villages had 'exceptionally beautiful women' living there.
<
Maria Theresa died in Vienna in 1780 at the age of 63, the only female to rule during the 650-year-long Habsburg dynasty.

theres

The monument of Maria Theresa was completed by Kaspar Zumbusch and Karl Hasenauer in the year 1887. Around her there are the four military generals Daun, Laudon, Traun and Khevenhueller.

statues and names1

27 July 09

Please click photos to enlarge.

As mentioned the other day, the façade of the Naturhistorisches Museum has names and statues depicting personifications of the various continents known to Austrian science at the time - Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Above, the names on the golden plate are Alexandre der Große, G.Mercator and Julius Caesar.

Below, names of Columbus, Imanuel Kant and Vasco da Gama.

As part of a recycling project, a youth organization near our area created this big bird out of metal scraps. The bird is as tall as the tree nearby.

I enjoy both travel and photography. Although I haven’t been all-over the world, I try to document my journey and share it around. Here, my current hometown Vienna, a city I come to love not just for its intrinsic beauty but its overall aura of good vibes, I share bits and pieces of what to see and enjoy. -Marie Gizelle
