Vienna Daily

One Viennese photo a day.

facebook google twitter tumblr instagram linkedin
highway vienna Vienna's high rises may not be as notable as Seattle's, New York's or San Francisco's but, its engineers had perhaps the best plans laid out for the city being convenient not just for motorists but for daily commuters as well. Hand in hand with its architects, Vienna's landscape seem like an urban jungle that is not so chaotic. ^_^

Photo above seen looking out from the Rotating Danube Tower. Click here for a view of some architecture and here for a view of an unripe sunset (Last month's theme day for "heights" entry too.

Below, a leopard at Vienna's Schönbrunn Tiergarten seem to be lost in thought. It is always anyway looking out, as if longing for its release.

Happy Theme Day!

-- Look up, don't be blue! --

Just conditioning myself actually for the gray days ahead. :) The Schönbrunn grounds seem to be a blue (positively though) at this particular moment!

Today, rather, yesterday (25th) was officially the first day snow falls on Vienna...but, very thinly so I have no photos to show. And gray days starts...now!

--Where actually?--

We each have different goals, different paths taken to go where we would want to. We have diverse experiences to getting there, others more colorful than the usual. Whatever it would be, enjoy the ride...there's always excitement to be had.

 -- So gray. ---

No amount of cold can stop tourists and locals from wandering around the Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens. The sky spells right but thank goodness it didn't pour. The Gloriette stands grand and all at the hill.

In time for the season (no pun intended), the Stadpark's garden clock shed off colorful petals and lush green leaves to a more fitting fall look....sort of.

---Still from the Danube Tower---

The Danube tower's restaurant is a rotating one so diners get a 360-degree view of Vienna  while eating. This part is the Vienna International Centre and Austria Center Vienna known wholly as UNO city or the the United Nations Organization city. It houses a number of international agencies.

sunset
As the sun begins to set.

Seen from the Danube Tower - the danube river and shadows cast upon Vienna's landscape. Would have waited a bit for the sun to set lower but the rotating tower (at 170 feet) didn't made it easy to take another shot that the sun is still visible.

Happy Theme day!

--Was so blue--

...Like Strauss' wrote

Danube so blue,
so bright and blue,
through vale and field
you flow so calm,
our Vienna greets you,
your silver stream
through all the lands
you merry the heart
with your beautiful shores...

Wattchadoin? I'm people-watching...
On my way to buy a postcard...
...undoubtedly one of the things I unconsciously do is watch the people or crowd around me when I am out and about the city center. And taking photos of them is inevitable...even though only their backs can be seen...

Who knows, one day soon I might be able to write a book about the many characters I see each day. ^_^

Cobblestones. It's like discovering new places, unexpected corners when you walk on them. This particular street leads to many of those, I could just get lost all day on purpose.

Rent a bike and tour around Vienna for as little as 5 euro in 6 hours. The first hour is gratis and then you just pay euro each for the succeeding hours.

That's touring in an eco-friendly way.

We honestly can't tell when the sun would be happily shining again so we took time off to go boating with the kids today. We had fun being in the water and snapping photos of them sails and other waterlovers. ;)

Nope, if only Tokyo is that near! Photo taken at Setagaya Park, while the blossoms are starting. That traditional Japanese summer house features Ikebana but we were unfortunately too early to arrive. This park will always be a special spot for me...it just connects me so much to my hopes of seeing Japan.

anker

The Anker Clock is like a big music box at the house of Helvetia Insurance (formerly Anchor Insurance) at Hoher Markt found at the center of Vienna. The Anker Clock is one of the most outstanding works of Art Nouveau and is a popular tourist attraction.

The Anker Clock is a bridge-like connection between the two parts of the building.  It was built on 22 August 1914. The "Uhrbrücke" has a span of ten meters and a height of 7.5 meters. The clock itself has a diameter of four meters. It was built between the years 1911 and 1914 according to the plans of Art Nouveau painter Franz Matsch. It is a tribute to famous personalities of Viennese history. The clock has figures reproduced as copper and have a Roman numeral for the hour on the head, while the minute indicator goes through a horizontal scale.

The  clock is to be found #1, Hoher Markt 10/11 Vienna- get off the Schwedenplatz station and walk up your way to Stephansdom but turn right two streets actually. Oh my, I'll provide a map, that's easier!

@ meine Tochter's Aufführung

It was almost 7 in the evening when we arrived, the play starts at about that time. :D My daughter performs as an orphan kid in the play Wastwater by Simon Peters. Wastwater is part of Lake District National Park in England and truth be told I have no idea why the play is titled such. Wastwater is shown at the Akademie Theatre on schedule, tickets here.

Gone Wild.
---
Heuriger - Austrian wine-taverns, where wine-growers serve the most recent year's wine.  But, there are also restaurants that appear like Heurigers..the difference being - a Heuriger is open for a very short time (maximum 3 weeks). This Wild restaurant near us is one of those that appears to be a Heuriger but is actually a restaurant offering traditional Austrian cuisine (Wiener schnitzel, Tafelspitz, Gulasch, Beuschel, Kaiserschmarren and company) and beer and coffee too.

Can't find my photo of the big bear by the entrance of this restaurant but will post as soon as I do. ;)

Sometimes, I think it would have been better if we live nearer the city center, where the buildings are closer to each other - so when it snows I could go up the highest floor and take photos of the snow-laden roofs.

Then again, it's fun where we are too! There's so much spaces for snow-play around and I can get the same dramatic effect on photos of a snowy night. ;)
