Vienna SkyZerschmettert in Stücke (im Frieden der Nacht) / Smashed to pieces (in the still of the night)
Smashed to pieces (in the still of the night)

This is the meaning of the inscription at the Falkturm in Esterházypark, where the Haus des Meeres is. The kids and I went up the deck to take some photos as it was a very lovely winter afternoon...with the sun out and clouds in full.
The Flakturms are six large, built of reinforced concrete defense and protective structures in Vienna, built within the years 1942 to 1945 as huge air-raid shelters with fitted air defense guns and fire control.

This particular flak's inscription was by Laurence Weiner. At the other side is the English version, only I wasn't able to take a photo....

Never been close to a bunker turned museum and your photo gave a brief glimpse of history. Beautiful clouds, looked like cotton stuck on the blue backdrop. Here's my Skywatch.
ReplyDeleteI did not know public air raid shelters like this existed! Great that they have been preserved so well!!
